Thread and shoulder relief groove calculator
Switch between pitch-keyed thread withdrawal grooves and diameter-keyed shaft-shoulder grinding-wheel reliefs without mixing their dimensions.WITHDRAWAL & RUN-OUT GROOVES
Two distinct standards. One fast lookup surface.
The section shows where each published limit applies. The labelled values—not the drawn proportions—govern.
External thread section: nominal Ø10 mm reduces to groove Ø7.7 mm; g₁ is at least 2.5 mm, g₂ is at most 4.5 mm, radial depth is 1.15 mm, and r is approximately 0.8 mm.
Preview any listed option in the same Figure 1e section. Previewing does not select or recommend it.
Figure 1e section, previewing option 01 of 2: b₁ 2 mm, h 0.3 mm in both directions, and r 0.8 mm. This is not a recommendation.
| Option | Groove width b₁ | Depth h | Radius r |
|---|---|---|---|
| 01 | 2 mm | 0.3 mm | 0.8 mm |
| 02 | 3 mm | 0.4 mm | 1 mm |
TWO TABLES, TWO INPUT LOGICS
Thread pitch sizes one family. Shaft diameter selects the other.
GB/T 3-1997 · Tables 2 and 4
External and internal thread grooves use different published pitch rows, width symbols and groove-diameter directions. Exact rows only—no interpolation.
GB/T 6403.5-2008 · Figure 1e / Table 1
The implemented form is the common external-cylinder and end-face grinding relief. Each diameter band contains multiple valid b₁/h/r combinations.
USE THE RESULT WELL
A table value does not choose the manufacturing detail for you.
Check g₁ minimum, g₂ maximum, groove diameter dg and its h12/h13 tolerance. The standard also requires a transition angle α of at least 30°.
Choose normal G₁ unless the structure requires the short form. Dg uses H13; the page derives single-side depth from the published diameter increase.
The result lists current-band options rather than marking one “recommended.” Larger parts may use a smaller specification where engineering judgment supports it.
